Kefalonia, the largest of the Ionian Islands, interests tourists more and more every year, who are looking for genuine Greek vibes, beautiful landscapes and beaches. The flagship of the island is Myrtos Beach, a magnificent beach in the north-west of the island. There is no tourist infrastructure here, and the beach was one of the places where scenes to the film "Captain Corelli" were filmed. The capital of Kefalonia is Argostoli, a lovely city located on a bay, with Metaxa main square and a stone bridge joining the shores of the bay. Tourism began to develop on the island in eighties of last century, there are still many beautiful places to discover here. In the south-eastern part of the island lies Skala, one of the places farthest south in Kefalonia, the seaside holiday town. There is a sandy-rocky beach here approx. 4 km long, surrounded by pines. The destination is developing dynamically, but despite this it retains its Greek character. Here are typical taverns and bars, in town you can buy lovely pottery, visit the remains of the Old City, the ruins of a Roman villa nearby. A little to the west of Skala, lies the fishing village Katelios. There is a sand and shingle beach here - Agia Barbara - about 200 m long, that gently descends into the sea, overlooking the island of Zakynthos. Eucalyptus trees, pines, walking routes, the peaceful surroundings cause tourists who wish to spend their holidays far from the hustle and bustle of resorts to gladly come here. Approx. 2 km from here is Turtle Beach, where the famous caretta-caretta turtles have their nests.
Closer to Argostoli between the Livathos hills lies the village of Svoronata with three beaches: Ammes, Avithos and Ai Helis. The beaches are friendly for families with children: uncrowded, gently descending into the sea. The village has retained its charm, there are narrow streets and taverns, fruit orchards and olive groves. It is different in Lassi, one of the most popular resorts of the island, located only 2 km from its capital. There are two main beaches here - Makris Yialos and Platis Yialos, and few sandy coves. There are many bars, taverns, restaurants, Greek and Italian, as well as great opportunities for watersports, among others, snorkelling. On the other side of the bay, on the peninsula opposite Argostoli lies Lixouri, a quiet town with a typical Greek and friendly atmosphere. In the surroundings are picturesque hills with monasteries and typical villages. The most famous beach in the area is the Xi, with a characteristic, red sand, that gently descends into the sea. While on holidays in Kefalonia, you may want to participate in optional excursions and visit both the beautiful island and the neighbouring Itaka.
