Thassos is the most northern island of Greece. It lies only 12 km south of the coast of Macedonia. The island is small, it has a little more than 100 km in circumference and impresses with its diversity. You might want to rent a car, because bus transport is focused on the road around the island, rarely reaching areas in the inland of the picturesque Greek villages. In the central part of the island the mountains rise with Ipsarion peak approx. 1200 m above sea level, which you can reach on foot or by Jeep.
The beautiful beaches of the island are easily accessible thanks to the good road networks, and even during a short holiday you can see those most famous and the little ones hidden in wild coves. The most famous beaches, like Golden Beach, Paradise, Tripiti, Psili Ammos, gently descend into the sea and are ideal for a family holiday. It is also worth visiting the small villages deep into the island, where time stopped a long time ago. In such places there is usually one tavern on the central square, a chapel, older men sitting in front of houses observing the surroundings, and cats wander around lazily in search of shade.
The capital of the island is Limenas, here are picturesque streets and a seaside boardwalk, taverns open until late, an interesting Archaeological Museum and excavations sites of ancient Thassos. Popular towns are also the vibrant Limenaria and Potos with scenic views and bustling taverns.
Around the island of Thassos - a perfect opportunity to get to know the most interesting areas of the island in one day. The programme includes a visit to the island - Limenas and picturesque mountain villages famous for the production of local products. It is a trip to places where the wonderful nature of Thassos is in harmony with the unique historical monuments - the picturesque Aliki, the famous Monastery of Archangel Michael - where the most valuable relic of the island is stored - the nail with which Jesus Christ's right hand was nailed to the cross. The programme includes visiting the highest located and one of the oldest settlements of Thassos - Kastro. There, the owner of the tavern will tell you about local customs and take you around the 15th-century Church of St Athanasius. On the way back to Limenaria a stopover by a picturesque waterfall. Kavala and Philippi - Kavala is one of the most beautiful cities in northern Greece, built on a slope, overlooking the sea and the island of Thassos. On the streets history mixes with modernity, there are narrow, cobbled streets, traditional houses, museums and churches, shops, restaurants and a modern port. A stroll through the old town, shopping and travel to Philippi. It was here that St Paul converted, here the first European was baptised - Lidia. Visiting the ruins of the ancient city founded by Philip II, father of Alexander the Great, where in 42 B.C. the battle took place that decided on the fate of the Roman Empire. Thassos by night - spend a nice evening in Thassos town. Enjoy the sunset from the historic Theater and the view of the capital town of the Island from Acropolis. Take a walk to the Ancient Market (Agora) and the old harbor. Exploring the interesting places - bars, shops, food. Return transport to your hotel. Price - aprox. 25 EUR.
