The familiar sounding name Azores probably comes from the Portuguese Açor - hawk or Azures - blue colour. In 2007, National Geographic recognised the Azores archipelago as one of the most attractive tourist regions in the world. The archipelago lies on the Atlantic Ocean, approx. 1500 km from Portugal, to which it belongs. The islands were discovered by Portuguese sailors in the 15th century on the way to the New World. The archipelago is divided into three groups: the eastern islands of Sao Miguel and Santa Maria, central to which Terceira, Sao Jorge, Graziosa, Pico and Faial belong, and the western part with Flores and Corvo. Due to the Gulf stream the islands have a mild climate, which causes that it is green all year round. Black vertical cliffs, the blue of the Ocean, vast craters of ancient volcanoes with transparent lakes form a unique scenery, striking with natural beauty. It is particularly worth going the Azores in the spring and summer. In the spring you can admire the flowering azaleas, for which Furnas in Sao Miguel is famous. In the early summer all over the archipelago you can admire the blooming hydrangeas, exceptionally spectacular on Flores island, which name derives from the flowers.
Sao Miguel, the largest island of the archipelago, has a length of 65 km and a width of 16 km. This is the most commonly chosen island by tourists, due to the extremely rich vegetation it is called "Green Island". Sao Miguel can be recommend to all enthusiasts of nature, as well as to amateurs of active relaxation. In its south-west part lies the capital and the largest port of the island, Ponta Delgada. This charming town has maintained its past beauty, it has winding streets ideal for evening walks, life revolves around 5 Outubro square, and in the summer concerts and festivals take place here. Due ot its location, Ponta Delgada is also an ideal getaway base for exploring the island. In the north there is the town of Ribeira Grande, known for its very fertile areas: even tea is grown here! The dark shingle beach is distinguished by the Blue Flag certificate and is known among windsurfers. Nearby is Vila Franca do Campo, the first capital of Sao Miguel, with crops of pineapples, bananas, oranges and grapes. The surroundings of Furnas are known for geothermal phenomena. You can admire the hot, sulfuric springs. In some places the earth is so hot that it can be used to prepare the regional dish cozido, which is cooked for a few hours in a pot buried in the ground. By the sea in Ilheu da Villa there is a natural swimming pool, distinguished by the Blue Flag.
