Greek gods love Rhodes! Helios, the god of the Sun, gave the island a record number of sunny days, which attracts many tourists here. Poseidon – the god of the seas makes sure the waters are crystal clear, Aeolus ensures a refreshing summer coolness and favourable winds for windsurfers, and Dionysus guards the vineyards of Attavyros.
Rhodes is the largest island of the archipelago called Dodecanese. In ancient times the god of the sun, Helios, was the patron of the island, hence it is often called the Island of the Sun. The ancients celebrated their god by erecting a huge monument at the port's entrance, which as Rhodes Colossus has been included as one of the seven wonders of the world. Another frequently encountered term of the island is the Island of Roses, as the symbol of Rhodes is a rose - the blooming flower of hibiscus. In medieval times the island was ruled by the Knights of Malta, who left behind huge, fortified strongholds. One of them is the Old City, which is a worldwide attraction due to its unique structure. Another attraction of the island is Lindos - the most picturesque, situated between two bays, stronghold of Knights, which attracts with the white houses built around it. When going to Rhodes you cannot but be taken by the wonderful bays and beaches: Kalithea with its famous springs, Tsambika a small church towering over it and Prasonissi - the mecca of windsurfers. In Rhodes there are also plenty of places where you can have fun in the evening; discos and clubs in the city of Rhodes, Lindos or Faliraki quiet down only in the morning. Faliraki is a very popular and entertaining resort approx. 15 km from Rhodes, known for its 5-km-long beach, watersports and intense nightlife. An attraction is also one of the largest waterparks in Europe. Ixia, located only 5 km from the attractions of Rhodes, is famous for its great conditions for leisure - very good bus connection and inexpensive taxis. The destination also attracts with its excellent conditions for windsurfing, high-class hotels and cosy taverns along the coast. Approx. 15 km from Faliraki, a typical summer resort, on the route Rhodes-Lindos lies Kolymbia, which picturesque surroundings are considered to be some of the prettiest on the island. There are 2 bays here with a lovely sand and shingle beach, closed off by cliffs protruding from the sea – excellent conditions for watersports. The resort is famous for its 3-km long alley of eucalyptus trees – the centre of social life with bars and nightclubs. On the east coast it is worth visiting Pefki - also called Pefkos - famous for its crystal clear waters and golden sandy beach intertwined by charming rocky coves, only 2 km from Lindos and Kiotari - a tourist-fishing village, an attraction of which is the sand and shingle beach up to 40 m wide and excellent taverns with fish and seafood.
