The Land of the Sun - Algarve and picturesque coast of the Atlantic Ocean are the two faces of Portugal. Algarve is the most famous tourist region of Portugal, located on the south coast and extends from Cape St. Vincent to the border with Spain.
From the south and west bathed in the waters of the Atlantic, from the north protected by a mountain range from winds. The coast of Algarve is over 150 km long. In the western part, the coastline is more varied, the sandy beaches are interrupted by cliffs and fantastic rock formations. That's what the famous Praia da Rocha is, the most famous beach in Algarve and the first tourist resort in the region. The gorgeous beach is more than 2 km long, and in the sandy rocks nature has forged tunnels and fantastic arches. A well-known resort here is Portimão - vibrant, with a port, picturesque markets, a lovely boardwalk and excellent restaurants. The local delicacy are the huge grilled sardines. In the quiet Carvoeiro there is a small, beautiful beach cutting into the town, and the wonderful cove is protected by cliffs. Traditional houses on the cliff and graceful boats of fishermen create a unique and atmospheric setting. The east coast is varied landscapes. Flat, with sand dunes, salinas and small islets, it boasts fantastic long and sandy beaches. Such beaches are in the area of Tavira. This beautiful and very photogenic town, which history dates back to ancient times, lies on two sides of the river Gilão, joined by a Roman bridge. Called Venice, Algarve Tavira has many churches, there are romantic, winding streets and picturesque houses with hip roofs. The wonderful beach of Ilha de Tavira is available by ferry, and to Cabana beach you can get to by ship. Monte Gordo, a resort located approx. 3 km from the border with Spain, is famous for its long beach and exceptionally warm water. The region of Algarve offers excellent conditions for sports that can change holiday relaxation into an interesting adventure. The biggest sport attraction is golf.
In Algarve there are more than 25 golf courses with an established reputation amongst enthusiasts, schools with professional instructors, shops with equipment. The traditional cuisine of the region is famous for its fish and seafood. You might want to try caldeiradas - a local variety of fish soup - and cod prepared in 365 ways - as many as there are days in a year. A symbol of regional cuisine is cataplana, a type of a wide pot with a lid, in which a dish of the same name is prepared - a masterly combination of meat and seafood. Delicious desserts according to traditional monastic recipes are based on local almonds and figs. The best wines of the region come from Lagos, Lagoa and Portimão. In Portugal we also invite you to Costa de Caparica on the Lisbon Riviera, a scenic resort located next to a sandy, long and wide beach. An ideal place for romantic dinners, the local restaurants are renowned for the excellent seafood. Here you can still see fishermen on traditional boats. The region of the Lisbon Riviera also offers other attractions: recurring events, music and film festivals, traditional feasts and celebrations, fairs, concerts and matches. It is worth coming to Touradas - the Portuguese version of a corrida without killing bulls and to listen to "Portuguese blues" - fado.
