That's what the famous Praia da Rocha is, the most famous beach in Algarve and the first tourist resort in the region. The gorgeous beach is more than 2 km long, and in the sandy rocks nature has forged tunnels and fantastic arches. A well-known resort here is Portimão - vibrant, with a port, picturesque markets, a lovely boardwalk and excellent restaurants. The local delicacy are the huge, grilled sardines. Traditional houses on the cliff and graceful boats of fishermen create a unique and atmospheric setting.
The east coast is varied landscapes. Flat, with sand dunes, salinas and small islets, it boasts fantastic long and sandy beaches. Such beaches are in the area of Tavira.
