The island of ancient gods and wise men is a place that you can fall in love with at first sight. The crystal clear sea, beautiful beaches, picturesque mountains, wonderful Mediterranean vegetation and the famous Muscat.
The legendary birthplace of the goddess Hera and the famous mathematician Pythagoras is the ideal choice for everyone who wants to discover the real Greece. The beautiful mountain landscapes interspersed with vineyards and olive groves, gourmet cuisine and hospitable residents will make holidays in Samos long-remembered. This most green island of the Aegean Islands is approx. 44 km long and approx. 19 km wide, and only a short cruise through the Strait of Mycale separates Samos from the Turkish Kusadasi. The capital of Samos is Vathi (Samos Town), located in the eastern part of the island. There is an Archaeological Museum here with interesting collections, it is also worth visiting Ano Vathi, situated in the higher part of the city with traditional houses and churches. To the south of the capital is Pythagorion, named so in 1955 in honour of the most famous son of the island: Pythagoras. The narrow streets, picturesque port, where in the summer next to the local resorts many beautiful yacht moor, numerous shops, bars, taverns and restaurants constitute the attractiveness of this town. Without a doubt the wonderful piece of ancient architecture also gives it fame: the Tunnel of Eupalinos (Eupalinian aqueduct). In the north of Samos is Kokkari, a former fishing village, and currently a fashionable resort. The focal point of the town is the square, where the locals and tourists meet. Thanks to constant winds this place is especially popular with windsurfers. Karlovassi, the second largest island town, is a great base for exploring its western part. The loveliest district is Paleo Karlovassi with old buildings and narrow streets. In the area there is the sandy-pebble beach Potami surrounded by green cliffs, there are also waterfalls and numerous Byzantine churches. The southwestern part of Samos is an ideal place for nature lovers and enthusiasts of full relaxation. Two villages lie next to each other by the Limnionas bay: Kambos and Votsalakia, connected by a long, sand and shingle beach, which has a scenic background - Mount Kerkis (1434 m above sea level). From Votsalaki a marked trail that is approx. 12 km long leads to the top, half way up you can stop at the Evangelistria monastery. Another attraction in the area is the Cave of Pythagoras. There are mostly sand and shingle beaches in Samos, and the most popular of them are: near Kokkari - Lemonakia in a beautiful bay on the intensely blue sea, and Tsamadou - crescent-shaped with a separable section for nudists, Potami, Mikro Seitani and Megalo Seitani to the east of Karlovasi and Glicorisa, the long shingle and rocky Mykali and Psili Amos - sandy, gently shelving, popular primarily among families with children. During your stay on the island you simply must be sure to taste the local products, of which the most famous are the sweet wine Moschato Aspro, tasty honeys, traditionally made cheeses and superb oranges.
