Limnos - relaxation on the island of Hephaestus

An oasis of peace and tranquility, sleepy towns, beautiful beaches, picturesque hills, delicious local specialties and the famous Greek hospitality - you will find it all on Limnos! The eighth largest Greek island is also called the Island of Hephaestus - the divine blacksmith who, as myths say, fell here after being brought down from Olympus by angry Zeus. This island, inhabited by less than 17,000 inhabitants, is a perfect place for an intimate holiday, without the crowds, because mass tourism has not reached it yet. The people of Limnos are friendly and very open towards foreign visitors.

Holidays in slow motion

Hidden coves, extensive beaches, scenic landscapes make Limnos the perfect place to rest in close contact with nature. The island has retained its authentic nature, and its inhabitants are attached to tradition, live according to their own rhythm, without hurry, cultivating the famous Greek "siga, siga". All visitors get a taste of the aura of tranquility. Vacations on Limnos are a great proposition for those who want to slow down, calm down and rest away from the crowds and bustling resorts.

Beaches, beaches, beaches!

There are over 200 beautiful sandy beaches on Limnos. They are open to the public and importantly, you can use the sun beds that belong to the neighboring bars - you just have to buy a small snack or drink in them. Of particular note is the Platy beach - one of the most beautiful on the island, and the Thanos beach - with white sand, crystal clear water and beautiful mountain views. The crystal clear turquoise water, the shallow Aegean Sea and quite windy weather make the island more and more popular among windsurfers and kitesurfers. A great place for surfers, both beginners and experienced ones, is the wide and sandy Keros beach.

Roman and Turkish coast on a Greek island

Located in the picturesque Mirina bay is the charming island capital. One of its greatest attractions is the largest Aegean Sea fortress - a castle on a hill visible from every corner of the city. In turn the center of social life is the Roman Coast with a beach and plenty of taverns with delicious Greek food, and the Turkish Coast with a harbor full of colorful fishing boats. It is especially worth to go here in the evening, when the residents meet for a common feast. Celebration of meals is treated very seriously here. Of course, without haste, in good company and with a glass of Ouzo.

Cheese from a basket and sweet Muscat - the flavors of Limnos

Limnos is famous for its wines and groceries with unique taste and excellent quality. Among them are local wines: white, pink, red. The most popular is Muscat from Limnos - top class sweet, white wine with rich aroma and golden color. For gourmets - local cheeses made of sheep, cow, goat or mixed milk - the best known are Melichloro and the feta-like Kalathaki. The name of the latter means... a basket, because the cheese matures for about 60 days in a wicker basket. The Kalathaki cheese is also a component of the traditional cheese cake with mint. While on Limnos, you can also taste the local honey, halva, baklava and sweets such as Venizelos or the local version of our popular sesame seeds - Samsun. While in Greece, you simply must try the excellent olive oil and Ouzo.

Sponge, linen and ceramics

In addition to Greek sweets, Greek oil and the traditional Ouzo, a souvenir from Limnos can also be handmade ceramics: mugs, cups or plates. Linen products are also popular: traditional Greek tablecloths and napkins, shopping bags and natural cosmetics and real sponges.

Did you know that...

  • Sponge diving was once the source of the prosperity on the island
  • On Limnos there is an original church without a roof
  • This Greek island is famous for trahanas, i.e. its own version of pasta
  • The dunes on Limnos are called a desert by the inhabitants
